CAN WE HAVE OUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO?

cake
This is something I think all women, especially mothers have asked themselves. Can we have it all? Damn right we can. But only if we all choose what’s really most important to our health and happiness and that of our family’s and simplify our lives by letting go of anything that doesn’t move us directly in that direction.

On that note I am going to be taking a break from Two Janes for a while. With my husband working overseas most of the year, and having two children by myself at home, another due in a few months and now studying towards my diploma in Interior Design, the time I spend on Two Janes needs to be spent studying. Gone are the days I can pull all nighters doing an assignment, I’m lucky if I make it till 10.30pm without crashing on the couch! (Especially when my nights will soon be full of two-hourly feeding!)

Yes we can have it all, but we need to be real with ourselves, sometimes we can’t do it all. Two Janes will be back, hopefully when I can share what’s going on in my dream career in interior design! Until then, thanks for being part of the fun xxx Abbie

THREE BIRDS RENOVATIONS

When I first heard about these women, I thought to myself, I want to be just like them when I grow up! (Never mind the fact I’m already fully grown with almost three kids). I love that three busy Sydney mums who were already successfully ruling the corporate world decided to jump off the comfort of that corporate cliff and plunge into the unknown to create Three Birds Renovations. Now they are working together to buy and renovate homes in just 6/7 weeks before selling them and making a tidy profit. Hmmm yes dream job right there.
3birdsprofile

They are currently renovating their third house, after two incredible results. We all love a before and after right, so feast your eyes…

Reno one, aptly named the Hoarders House

Reno two, the Hamptons House

Their style is inspirational, but attainable and they generously share their experience (right down to budgets and profit made) and design tips – who would believe these lights are from Bunnings?! 3 birds cheap lights
And this great idea for a laundry bench top, less than $100 also from Bunnings.cheap laundry bench

You can follow along their current reno on their new youtube channel, it’s must see viewing for me each Monday night, it’s so exciting watching their real time progress. It’s also brilliant to see three strong, talented women working hard together to create something amazing, their chemistry and humour is infectious and leaves you wanting to join their squad.

It takes a huge amount of bravery to follow your dreams, especially when you have already created a strong career in another field. I know many of my friends who are in their 30’s, having forged successful corporate careers and especially after becoming mothers are wanting something more. A job that will feed your soul as well as your bank balance. I’ve been going through the same process, with the knowledge that I will be going back to work next year and so have decided to take my own little leap. I am currently doing a Diploma in Interior Design, hoping to turn this passion of mine into a career. Watch this space! xx

Adore Magazine

Sometimes the best things in life really are free, like this stunning interiors magazine that I love reading every issue! Adore Magazine is an Australian online home and lifestyle magazine that can be delivered to your inbox every issue at no charge.

Their latest issue is definitely one of their best, here’s a sneak peak at three stunning kitchens they have featured. The first is possibly my favourite. The mix of a simple subway tile laid to create a beautiful herringbone pattern pared with raw timber floating shelves. Ahhhh, kitchen envy is currently washing over me.

I love the modern take on this farm style kitchen, black cabinetry is such a winner.

Lastly a stunning coastal kitchen from the talented girls behind Three Birds Renovations (more on them on the blog later in the week), every kitchen should have an outdoor servery that looks like this!

HOME RENO: GARAGE CONVERSION INSPIRATION

With our baby due in November, our children will soon outnumber the bedrooms in the house. Our oldest will be 16 then and very keen to have their own space, luckily we have a garage/granny flat that will be perfect, with a lot of imagination and hard work!

Although part of our garage (which is about 70 square metres) has already been turned into a granny flat, the part we want to renovate is still used as a garage, it has the most natural light and bags of potential.

I was so happy to hear my oldest loves the vibe of New York lofts and monochrome palettes. Definitely my genes running through her veins! We are wanting to leave the wooden beams along the ceiling exposed and painted white, add tongue and groove jib board to give the impression of wooden walls and create a loft bed. We will restore two large wooden framed windows that I love, and replace the garage door that opens to our courtyard with bifolding stackers. I’m really excited that I will be able to use a few of the items I have left over from my clothing boutique, like vintage industrial style light shades and a custom made iron freestanding clothing rack.

Here’s some spaces inspiring our renovation…

Now lets see if we can transform our garage into something incredible that resembles these amazing spaces! Hopefully we end up with a little slice of New York style right here in the Bay, I’m excited to get it under way and show you the results!

HOME RENO: LIVING ROOM, A WORK IN PROGRESS

Although the main extension to our house was completed last year, there is still so much on the to do list, it’s very much a work in progress. My interiors budget was eaten up by boring but necessary things, so our living and dining space are very, very…minimalist may be a polite way to say it, e.g. we have outdoor furniture in our dining space!

Not many of us have the ability to go on a Block-style shopping spree to furnish and decorate a space, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan it now, even though the end result may not become a reality for a while. By planning a space you eliminate the possibility of purchasing sometimes expensive items that don’t end up even working in the room and you have to either replace or live with it begrudgingly. A plan will also allow you to know when to jump on a second hand store treasure or pick up big ticket items when they are heavily discounted. Slowly but surely you will piecing together the puzzle of your dream room.

Our living room has great bones, the high white wooden beams on the ceiling my favourite feature, great natural light thanks to floor to ceiling windows and light wooden floors. We have a few items already, just the bare necessities; a comfy large couch to relax on, a soft rug for kiddies to play and a ridiculously large TV (all husbands think these are a necessity right?!). I’m really thankful we also got a custom made wall cabinet made by our kitchen supplier, designed to hide all the electrical wires, DVD’s and kids games. We designed it to be floating so it takes up no floor space, as our lounge isn’t a very generous size.
lounge dreams 1
blog lounge shelvesI love the look of custom made large shelves filled with books, magazines and collected treasures (also a great way to sneak some toy storage under the bottom shelf!). I’m not sure if I would like to go with white or a light oak finish yet.

lounge hanging chairPerhaps not the most practical thing with wee children, but I don’t care, I loooove hanging cane chairs, they are the perfect mix of scandi-boho-beachy looks that I love.

Lounge dreams coffee tableA round coffee table would balance the hard straight lines created by the existing furniture and be the safest style with children running around. I am in love with the round coffee tables Australian designer Mark Tuckey creates, just got to save my penny’s and get someone to start stocking his incredible range in New Zealand!

lounge finishing touchesEven more so than big ticket items, the finishing touches are what really give a space soul and personality. I love to add colour through plants and accessories and texture and interest through layered throws and cushions. Hopefully when our living area is finished it will feel warm, inviting and relaxing…when ever that will finally be!

YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS ARE NOW ON SALE!

winter header picIt’s not even the middle of winter and already the sales have begun! For someone that can make the most menial excuse to purchase seem extremely justifiable, you can imagine when I see a serious sale price, I convince myself I am actually saving money.

I know sales from your favourite designers can lead even the most sane of us to act like a crazy person, so earlier this year I wrote a Fashion 101: How To Shop a Sale guide to help.

Here’s a few of my favourite designer threads already on sale, more top brands will follow suit in the coming weeks. The items I have chosen are either timeless and will be sought after winter after winter, or they are trans-seasonal stunners that will work in your wardrobe year round. Now they may go even cheaper, but you risk missing out on them all together, such is the gamble of the designer sale season!

LET THE NURSERY INSPIRATION BEGIN

I’m not even half way through my pregnancy but am already excitedly planning the baby’s room, I’m loving losing myself in pinterest and instagram feeds. You may remember this super talented and stylish pair from their time on The Block Australia. Sophie and Dale Vine’s nursery for their new baby Van is predictably amazing. Yes his name is Van Vine, you just know he’s going to be one cool kid right.
vanvine11
vanvine1vanvine1aI love the neutral palette used, perfect for wee girls and boys. Elements of nature are seen throughout the space, from the stunning Cole & Sons ‘woods’ wallpaper (I’ve used the same wallpaper in my previous house and love it), to rustic timber accessories and woodland creatures appearing around the room.
vanvine2vanvine3vanvine8My favourite feature in the room is the hanging clothes rack Dale made – an idea I just may pinch!

DREAMS ARE FREE

Just because I don’t have the bank balance to buy everything I fall in love with, a girl can still window shop right! Here’s what I’ve been dreaming would suddenly appear in my life…

Two Janes Wishlist June 13

Shades of black, white, dark navy and grey are my go to for my winter wardrobe. Country Road has 25% until midnight tonight, so this grey sweater and cute beanie are like every item on sale, a lot easier to justify! The dark navy slim line coat from ASOS would give a lift to my otherwise monochrome daily looks. Dark navy goes with everything, but is a nice change from a black or grey coat.

I’m already daydreaming about cute baby things, these booties from Superette are so adorable! Although my two year old may find it a little unfair that I stick her in $8 Kmart kicks and the baby gets these flash digs!

And finally on this cold Sunday morning, I could think of nothing better than being cozied up in bed in the gorgeous linen Jaimie Kay Duvet (in my dream I’m still lazing in bed after a sleep in, so far from my 6am wake up call reality!) and checking out some interior inspiration from one of Paperplane’s many amazing books.
